Caving in Austin

I wanted to put say that we were spelunking in Austin because spelunking is a much more fun word to say and sounds cooler, but according to Wikipedia, spelunkers do not have the best reputation. Even though we may have gotten horribly lost trying to find the cave, we were OK below ground.

It started when Alexia posted on her blog the story about the
spelunking UT students who needed rescue, and for some reason, that made us think it'd be a good place to explore.

Guided by Alexia's vast knowledge of the area and responsible caving expertise, went to Barton Creek Saturday afternoon to find Airman's Cave. Finding the actual cave entrance took only minutes, but we thought it was the wrong place, so after crawling around the entrance for a few minutes, we resumed hiking.

Almost two hours later and a little advice from other hikers in the area, we were back in that same caving entrance, ready to crawl through the birth canal. You'll see why it's called that in the pictures of us being "born again" on the way out.

Next time, we're hoping to make it to the Aggie Art Gallery. And yes, even with all the bumps and bruises, we're already looking forward to our next crawling adventure!

Hey I know you posted this almost a year ago, but I'm one of the cavers to Austin. I help lead most of the beginner trips here and would love for you and your friends would come join us on one of our trips. We will help you learn to navigate caves like Airmans. Plus, all the training is done in Whirlpool cave in South Austin. Http://www.utgrotto.org

Hey! I've been to Airman's cave once and I went with a good friend as a guide. He is now injured. I was wondering if you guys used a guide and if they are open to being hired.

It's so hard to find cave guides and I'd really rather not get lost down there. Thanks!
